Brief Update, 1/10/09

Dear Reader,

"US says Iraqis may still be held without charges," according to the British news agency Reuters.

"Some prisoners held indefinitely without charge by U.S. forces in Iraq may not be freed or given trials, even though U.S. forces lost the authority to hold them at the beginning of the year, a U.S. military spokesman said." http://wire.antiwar.com/2009/01/09/us-s ... -charge-2/

The U.S. military is holding 15,000 prisoners, most of them indefinitely and without charges. It seizes whoever it wants, does to them whatever it chooses and justifies its actions to no-one.

Abruptly, family members disappear, potentially never to be seen again or at least not to be seen for some indefinite time period, perhaps many years and their status, their health and treatment in many cases are unknown to their families. This U.S. military lawlessness can only make matters worse in Iraq.

None of us would want our loved ones treated this way. Each of us would feel frustration and horrific anxiety if we went through the legal system to try to free them and we got no where, just silence.

This is yet another terrible part of life in Iraq. They look to you and me as Americans to raise our voices to do something about this severe injustice and yet too often they receive silence from us, just as they do from the U.S. military.

As people of conscience and compassion, we can do far better than that. Please raise your voice, for it matters and they and we and the world need to hear it.

Dick
