"It is crazy," said the 35 ish woman referring to the Iraq war as she walked up pushing a stroller with her 11/2 year old tiny boy inside. "It doesn't even make the news anymore."
"But life goes on and it seems like the war doesn't matter," she stated. "I joined Cindy Sheehan some time ago but people get burned out on it [protesting the war]. It doesn't seem to do any good."
It was a warm night and when she was ready to leave, she handed a soft drink to me and wished the vigil well.
"It's nice that you do that," said a 60 ish man as he read the sign. "That one is tragic, just tragic," he added while shaking his head as he turned and slowly walked away.
Last night's vigil received numerous horn honks, two fingered peace signs, waves and call-outs of support. And it was also joined by the 63-year-old Haitian man who often attends.
Meanwhile in Iraq, the death and destruction continues. The latest data I have is that on Monday, 20 Iraqis were killed, 65 were seriously injured and on Sunday 18 Iraqis were killed, 49 were seriously injured. It is endless.
These are men, women and children who until catastrophe struck, had lives and dreams. But most were killed by bombs as America's war shows no signs of ending. That 60 ish man was right, it is a real tragedy and for what?
But thousands of miles away in the Los Angeles area, a peaceful vigil was held under brilliant blue skies. It was a beautiful night to remind others of a distant war in which many people have a paid a severe price with the hope they will not be forgotten.
And it is also with the hope that President Obama will recall the promises he made as a candidate just several months ago and abandon the Bush war plan he has adopted in full, and instead bring this war to an end.
